Montana Summer Staycation Series: Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

Welcome to part 4 of the Montana Summer Staycation Series! 🧳

This series was born from the fact that some of my best getaways are those that happen in my home state of Montana.

While summer is naturally a season to go out of town and travel to new places, sometimes you just want a weekend trip that doesn’t feel like a big fuss.

Somewhere that’s close enough where you can simply pack up the car the day of and take your time getting there. Somewhere that offers a laid back atmosphere that’s truly relaxing and rejuvenating.

That’s what these staycation destinations have been all about!

Here’s a recap of what’s been covered so far:

And now you’re here!

In this blog post, we’re traveling about 2-2.5 hours southeast of Billings, MT to Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area for a weekend full of exploring and adventure.

Bighorn is another one of those hidden gems that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, but once you visit, you’ll wonder why everyone isn’t talking about it.

With insanely beautiful canyon views, a pristine lake perfect for boating, and trails that’ll make you want to lace up your hiking boots, this is the kind of place that feels like a true escape. It’s ideal for anyone looking to get out of town without crossing state lines or booking a flight.

So, whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend adventure, here’s everything you need to know about making the most of your time in Bighorn Canyon!

Where to Stay Near Bighorn Canyon

  • Horseshoe Bend Campground

Located just outside of Lovell, WY (one of the closest towns to Bighorn Canyon’s south entrance), Horseshoe Bend Campground offers unbeatable views of the lake and canyon walls.

You can park your RV or pitch a tent and enjoy easy access to the water. It’s simple, scenic, and peaceful, which is truly everything you want from a good camp spot!

  • Afterbay Campground

On the Montana side of the park near Fort Smith, Afterbay Campground is another great option if you want to be close to the Bighorn River and enjoy some epic sunrises. It's quiet, family-friendly, and offers boat access for those looking to hit the water early!

  • Airbnb or Cabin Rentals in Fort Smith

If camping’s not your thing, check out some of the cozy cabins and Airbnb options in Fort Smith. Many are geared toward fly fishermen, but they make a great home base for anyone looking to explore the canyon without fully “roughing it”.

Where to Eat Near Bighorn Canyon

Okay, I have to be real with you on this one… Bighorn Canyon isn’t known for its restaurant scene, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck when you’re visiting the area!

With a little planning, you can still enjoy some local spots and good eats before or after your adventures.

  • Ok-A-Beh Marina Snack Bar

If you're spending the day near the Ok-A-Beh Marina, this seasonal snack bar is a convenient stop for a quick burger, fries, or cold drink. It’s nothing fancy, but it hits the spot after a morning on the lake.

This small-town café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is a go-to for anyone passing through Fort Smith. Expect comfort food, friendly faces, and hearty portions.

If you're entering from the south via Lovell, swing by the Mustang Café. It’s a classic diner-style spot known for its breakfast plates and homemade pie. Bonus: it’s just a few minutes from the south entrance of the park.

  • Pack a Cooler

With the remote nature of Bighorn Canyon, one of the smartest things you can do is pack a cooler with snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. That way, you’re not relying on the few seasonal or small-town spots and can picnic at a scenic overlook or by the water!

What To Do Near Bighorn Canyon

Bighorn Canyon is all about nature, so expect to spend most of your time hiking, boating, fishing, and soaking in the views. A few of the most popular things to do in the area include:

  • Rent a Boat or Kayak at Ok-A-Beh Marina 🚤

One of the best ways to experience the canyon is from the water! The towering canyon walls, crystal-clear water, and peaceful surroundings make for a bucket list-worthy day on the lake.

Rentals are available seasonally through the Ok-A-Beh Marina.

  • Hike the Sullivan’s Knob Trail 🥾

Sullivan’s Knob is one of the more accessible trails in the park and offers stunning panoramic views of the canyon. It’s short (just under a mile), relatively easy, and gives you that “wow” moment without a major time commitment.

  • Visit the Yellowtail Dam 💦

The Yellowtail Dam is a quick little stop, but seeing the dam up close is pretty cool and it gives you a glimpse into how the area came to be what it is today!

  • Wildlife Viewing 🐐

From wild horses to bighorn sheep, this area is packed with wildlife, especially if you’re exploring the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range nearby. When you’re visiting, you’re sure to snap some great pics, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready!

  • Fishing on the Bighorn River 🎣

Known as one of the best trout streams in the country, the Bighorn River draws anglers from all over. Whether you’re a fly fishing pro or just curious, you can book a guided trip or cast a line right from the shore!

There ya have it – your summer staycation itinerary picks for Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Bighorn Canyon might not have the name recognition of Glacier or Yellowstone, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s uncrowded, breathtaking, and just far enough off the beaten path to feel like a true adventure.

As the final stop in our Montana Summer Staycation Series, this one’s for the nature lovers and those who truly want to unplug and recharge in the great outdoors.
